Why oceanography is fascinating to me

One thing that has always amazed me, and from an early age, is that while this planet has 70% of it’s surface covered in water, we really don’t know that much about what is going on at sea.  Another fact that I’ve learned in the past few years, thanks to economic and maritime treaties, half of all US territory has barely been explored because it is underwater (including a large part of the Marianas Trench, the deepest parts of ocean in the world).  This amazement has me interested in oceanography since I was a child, as well as every young boy’s fascination with space exploration, and I still try to keep up on new discoveries both in outer space and under the ocean (and Shark Week has become an annual tradition for me).

But, as it stands today, we know more about Mars than we do about the deep ocean…
