Many animals living underwater acquired an uncommon shape, uncommon at least for us living above the sea surface. These animals were forced throughout millions of years to change, by the evolutionary processes. Because of that, these animals are the best in what they do. How we prove that? They are not extinct… yet.
To better understand this idea, take the whales as an example, they are long-lived animals, fast (some can swim over 50 km/hour), strong, can travel long distances and eat tons of food in one day. They have all the requirements to be a successful whale! But if you place this animals somewhere outside the sea, they will die in hours, maybe minutes.
